Strengthening and Extending Unitarian Universalism for the Next Century
Unitarian Universalism is at a significant juncture today in its development as a faith and as a religious Association of congregations. The question before us now is how to build upon our strengths as we work together to shape a future in which we can live our vital vocation as a religious movement.
Building on our liberal religious heritage, and exploring the vigor of our present, we believe we can move forward with conviction into a future that calls on us to live out our unique religious mission as Unitarian Universalists in our congregations and in the world. Our individual and collective souls hold dreams for our Association that are like flickering temple flames. Our hopes and visions are the sacred part of us that longs to be released and embodied in new and vital ways.
We need to shape our future together. The work of the next administration of the Unitarian Universalist Association must emerge out of a deliberate process of the administration directly connecting with our congregations on this continent, learning from them, and authentically discerning with them our common calling for the next century.
An Innovative Campaign That Is Also a Movement
We are calling the process of this campaign, "Future-Church." With it, we advocate for specific plans to strengthen and extend Unitarian Universalism in the next century. We seek to gather all of our deepest aspirations for Unitarian Universalism¡¯s future and to realize them.
Throughout this campaign, we will recognize where this "Future-Church" is already manifesting in the best of what we are as congregations and as an Association. We will "bear witness" to the places where this future is already demonstrated in the best practices of our congregations and in the various innovative programs and ministries occurring within and beyond congregations (for example, on college campuses, youth conferences, street ministries, and community ministries.).
Together we will explore and map the common ground that informs us and the common calling that transforms how we do our work as independent yet interdependent congregations. Together we will articulate how our Unitarian Universalist "Way of the Spirit" leads us and challenges us to enter into meaningful communion with each other and with what is Holy and roots us in a genuine concern for the common good.
